How is methamphetamine abused?

  • Most commonly smoked but can also be snorted, injected, or swallowed. 

What are the short-term effects of methamphetamine use?

  • Increased wakefulness and physical activity, having lots of energy
  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature
  • Irregular/rapid heartbeat
  • Unintentional overdose and/or death

What are the long-term effects of methamphetamine use?

  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Insomnia
  • Mood problems
  • Violent behavior
  • Paranoia
  • Memory loss
  • Hallucinations and delusions
  • Weight loss
  • Severe dental problems (“meth mouth”)
  • Intense itching leading to skin sores from scratching 
  • Increased chances of acquiring HIV or viral hepatitis through shared injection equipment or sexual behavior associated with methamphetamine use
  • Repeated use may lead to methamphetamine use disorder
  • Unintentional overdose and/or death
